Development of the Federal Policy on Research Misconduct

The Federal Policy on Research Misconduct became effective Dec. 6, 2000. This policy on research misconduct includes a new definition of research misconduct issued by Office of Science and Technology Policy. The policy and definition (although not specific rules of procedure) are to be used by all government agencies that fund research.

The earlier Draft Policy and Definition of Research Misconduct is also shown here with annotation to show the wording that was the object of comment at the October 14,1999 National Town Meeting on Research Misconduct. Examples of previous definitions and attempt at definition are also provided here.
